Humor is Survival Training for Battling Cancer

In last month’s column, we discussed research in psychoneuroimmunology which suggested that one’s emotional state influences the body’s biochemistry in a manner that can either promote good health, or interfere with it. But is there any evidence that emotions can actually have an impact on survival? Can a persistent positive or negative frame of mind as you battle your cancer influence whether you live or die? If so, this provides all the motivation you need to begin making an effort to develop skills which help you manage your mood on a day-to-day basis.

Several studies have shown that a positive attitude or emotional state can boost your chances of surviving cancer. In one study, among patients with metastatic (spreading) cancers, those who expressed greater hope at the time of their diagnosis survived longer. In another study, over 400 reports of spontaneous remission of cancer were reviewed and analyzed. The patients themselves attributed their cure to a broad range of causes, but only one factor was common to all the cases — a shift toward greater hope and a positive attitude.

One clinician traced unexpected tumor shrinkage to favorable changes in the psychosocial situation of the patient. Examples of such changes include “a sudden fortunate marriage; the experience of having one’s entire order of clergy engage in an intercessory prayer; sudden, lasting reconciliation with a long-hated mother; unexpected and enthusiastic praise and encouragement from an expert in one’s field; and the fortunate death of a decompensated alcoholic and addicted husband who stood in the way of a satisfying career.”

The late Norman Cousins described a national survey of oncologists (completed during his stay at the UCLA Medical School) in his last book, Head First: The Biology of Hope. Of the 649 who offered their opinions on the importance of various psychological factors in fighting cancer, “More than 90% of the physicians said they attached the highest value to the attitudes of hope and optimism.”

All of this research is consistent with the findings of a recent study showing that method actors asked to generate the emotion of joy within themselves showed an increase in the number of natural killer cells circulating in the blood stream within 20 minutes. (Remember, a key role of natural killer cells is to seek out and destroy tumor cells throughout your body.) Once they got themselves out of this positive state, their levels of natural killer cells quickly dropped again.

Joy, of course, is the emotion we experience during humor and laughter. So these findings are also consistent with the findings discussed in an earlier Humor Your Tumor article (see the April, 1998 column) showing that watching a humorous video increases the number of, and activity of, natural killer cells.

There have always been doctors who have emphasized the importance of a “will to live” in fighting serious diseases. Most recently, this banner has been carried nobly by Dr. Bernie Siegel. He emphasizes the importance of hope, determination, optimism and a “fighting spirit” among patients who are battling cancer.

Evidence of the importance of a fighting spirit was obtained in another study of cancer survivors. Cancer patients with a fighting spirit were most likely to be long-term survivors, and have no relapses. Short-term survivors were more likely to show a “stoic, stiff upper lip attitude,” and to continue their lives either as if nothing were different, or with a sense of helplessness or hopelessness.

The question, of course, is how to you go about generating or sustaining hope, optimism, determination and a fighting spirit if these are not qualities you’ve shown throughout your life. Love and your own spirituality are important sources of this hopeful and optimistic attitude. Another source is your sense of humor. It is no coincidence that so many cancer survivors credit their sense of humor for getting them through their ordeal. Humor helps overcome and work through the trials of each day, and when you find a way of laughing in the midst of your problems, you automatically shift toward a frame of mind that invites a hopeful outlook and a conviction that you can beat this disease.

So make it your goal to learn to find something to laugh at every day, and to take yourself a little less seriously, as you continue to take your illness and your treatments very seriously.

35 Year Breast Cancer Survivor With No Chemo or Radiation: Ask, Believe, Receive

My Mom is a 35 year breast cancer survivor. She did not have chemotherapy, her doctors did not believe it would help.

She had surgery as was common in the early 70’s, and given a terminal prognosis of 12 to 18 months. My Mom has lived the principals of The Secret and is a happy, healthy 86 years old. Her doctor’s were shocked at her remission.

The whole; ask, believe, receive, concept along with the gratitude attitude seems to those of us who use it to be quite valid indeed. As for the science – there does seems to be an awful lot of it out there to support this.

Manifesting a Yellow Marble Changed My Life

I was hit by a panic attack in Germany 2006 in Stuggart, when I was supporting England in the World Cup, and after this happened to me I suffered from them for about a year and a half. In my mind I knew there was nothing wrong with me, but I couldn’t get away from these attacks. Sometimes I couldn’t even leave my house. It was a horrible time and I thought I’d never get rid of them.

My friend Daniel Gooda introduced The Secret to me. I did what The Secret told me to do, and one thing I wanted to do was manifest something into my life through my thoughts. I spent two weeks thinking and playing images in my head of a yellow marble (I thought this would be a unique thing to manifest).

Then, a few weeks later, I decided to spend some time in Denmark with my Uncle. I told him what I was trying to do and he supported me. One day I was playing with my two year old cousin in the garden, shoveling sand into a wheel barrow. On the fourth shovel I stopped to catch my breath, looking up into the sky, and as I looked down at the wheelbarrow a yellow marble revealed itself from within the sand… (I learned later that my Uncle and Aunty had never bought marbles for their kids)

I felt this feeling of overwhelming bliss, joy, and excitement, and from that day I haven’t had any panic attacks, and I realise that I am in control of my life through my thoughts.

Ability To Cope With Stress May Play A Role In Cancer Progression

(Center for the Advancement of Health) — A review of the mind-body connection in cancer patients reveals that the stress of the diagnosis may make the disease worse, but also suggests that good coping style may aid treatment and outcome.

“Interventions focused on improving women’s ability to cope with cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery may have beneficial effects on emotional adjustment and potentially on physiological processes,” say Linda J. Luecken, Ph.D., of Arizona State University and Bruce E. Compas, Ph.D., currently of Vanderbilt University and formerly with the University of Vermont.

The authors draw from several studies and lines of evidence to show that stress, mental state and coping style all work together to affect biological factors such as immune function and hormone levels, both of which play roles in cancer progression. Their article appears in the December issue of the Annals of Behavioral Medicine.

While stress, distress, depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder have all been linked to reduced immune function and altered hormone balance, healthy coping has been shown to both improve these factors and could potentially affect cancer outcomes, they say.

Symptoms of anxiety and depression affect 30 percent to 40 percent of women at first diagnosis of cancer. PTSD is estimated to affect 3 percent to 10 percent of these women. Virtually all cancer patients experience some level of stress and distress, often due to intrusive thoughts that can follow them for months to years after their diagnosis.

The researchers define coping as “conscious, volitional efforts to regulate one’s cognitive, behavioral, emotional and physiological responses to stress and stressful aspects of the environment.”

They describe active coping as taking a direct and rational approach to dealing with a problem, while passive coping involves indirect approaches such as avoidance, withdrawal and wishful thinking.

Studies have shown that people who adopt active coping strategies have better immune function and lower cortisol levels, and just the opposite for people who use passive coping strategies.

“There is clear evidence that interventions can have positive effects on emotional adjustment, functional adjustment and treatment of disease-related symptoms (e.g. pain, nausea, coughing),” the authors say.

A more limited body of research suggests that such interventions have a measurable effect on immune function and cortisol levels. Likewise, there is some preliminary evidence that psychotherapeutic approaches can reduce recurrence and improve survival times.

Both active coping and effective psychological treatment can also aid cancer treatment by ensuring that women more closely follow their cancer treatment regimens, they say.

How Does it Feel to Want?

Years ago, I had a friend that would always ask me how it felt to want something.  It was usually after I saw some shoes or a bag or something that was a little out of my price range at the moment.  It was, “How does it feel to want?”  At the time, it felt kinda bad because I didn’t know what I know now.

NOW, I understand that wanting something is the very first step to HAVING it!  So, let yourself want whatever you want.  Feel it, really feel the desire for it, no matter what it is.  Then you can move on to the feelings of having it that will engage the Law of Attraction to bring it to you.  How can you feel as if you already have it if you’ve never allowed yourself to really want it? 

Think about what it is you really want and then WANT it and tell me, how does it feel to want?
