Using Mistletoe for the Treatment of Cancer

leave a comment »

This treatment modality is used in place of conventional therapies to treat cancer.  Seek advice from a qualified physician before replacing standard cancer therapy with mistletoe treatment.

What does mistletoe treatment involve?  Mistletoe, a semi-parasitic plant, has been used for over 75 years to treat tumors and is one of the most widely used alternative cancer treatments in Europe.  Mistletoe extract is usually administered by subcutaneous injections in the morning hours, ideally near the site of disease, three to seven times a week.  Treatment duration can be several months to years.

How is mistletoe thought to treat cancer?  Mistletoe extracts are used to stimulate the immune system and kill cancer cells.  The active ingredients in mistletoe, viscotoxins and lectins, can kill cells by damaging cellular membranes, stopping protein synthesis and stimulating the immune system.

What has been proven about the benefit of mistletoe?  The major effects of mistletoe as determined in laboratory and animal studies include stimulation of the immune system, induction of programmed cell death (apoptosis) and protection from potential carcinogens.  Cancer Net, a branch of the National Cancer Institute reviewed more than sixteen human studies using mistletoe to treat cancer.  Only a few studies reported statistically significant positive results.  The positive results included reduced tumor size, increased survival, recovery of blood counts and improved quality of life.  Mistletoe is not approved for use in the U.S. and will not be until further research has proven the efficacy of mistletoe in treating cancer.

What is the potential risk or harm of mistletoe?  Pharmaceutical grade mistletoe extract has minimal side effects but allergic reactions have been reported.  Symptoms included anaphylactic reactions, chills, fever, headache and irregular heart rate.  Elevation in body temperature and wheal formation at the site of administration are considered signs of immune system stimulation and are part of the normal therapeutic process. Eating mistletoe is highly toxic, especially to infants and children.  Patients on any type of monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor antidepressants should not take mistletoe because of a risk of tyramine crisis.  This product should only be used under the supervision of a health care provider.

How much does mistletoe treatment cost?  Mistletoe can be obtained in Europe and less easily in the U.S.  Treatments are available in Germany for $160 (U.S.) per day.  In the U.S., some patients may be eligible for enrollment in clinical trials.

Humor is Survival Training for Battling Cancer

leave a comment »

“Laughter in and of itself cannot cure cancer nor prevent cancer, but laughter as part of the full range of positive emotions including hope, love, faith, strong will to live, determination and purpose, can be a significant and indispensable aspect of the total fight for recovery.”
-Harold H. Benjamin, PhD

In last month’s column, we discussed research in psychoneuroimmunology which suggested that one’s emotional state influences the body’s biochemistry in a manner that can either promote good health, or interfere with it. But is there any evidence that emotions can actually have an impact on survival? Can a persistent positive or negative frame of mind as you battle your cancer influence whether you live or die? If so, this provides all the motivation you need to begin making an effort to develop skills which help you manage your mood on a day-to-day basis.

Several studies have shown that a positive attitude or emotional state can boost your chances of surviving cancer. In one study, among patients with metastatic (spreading) cancers, those who expressed greater hope at the time of their diagnosis survived longer. In another study, over 400 reports of spontaneous remission of cancer were reviewed and analyzed. The patients themselves attributed their cure to a broad range of causes, but only one factor was common to all the cases — a shift toward greater hope and a positive attitude.

One clinician traced unexpected tumor shrinkage to favorable changes in the psychosocial situation of the patient. Examples of such changes include “a sudden fortunate marriage; the experience of having one’s entire order of clergy engage in an intercessory prayer; sudden, lasting reconciliation with a long-hated mother; unexpected and enthusiastic praise and encouragement from an expert in one’s field; and the fortunate death of a decompensated alcoholic and addicted husband who stood in the way of a satisfying career.”

The late Norman Cousins described a national survey of oncologists (completed during his stay at the UCLA Medical School) in his last book, Head First: The Biology of Hope. Of the 649 who offered their opinions on the importance of various psychological factors in fighting cancer, “More than 90% of the physicians said they attached the highest value to the attitudes of hope and optimism.”

All of this research is consistent with the findings of a recent study showing that method actors asked to generate the emotion of joy within themselves showed an increase in the number of natural killer cells circulating in the blood stream within 20 minutes. (Remember, a key role of natural killer cells is to seek out and destroy tumor cells throughout your body.) Once they got themselves out of this positive state, their levels of natural killer cells quickly dropped again.

Joy, of course, is the emotion we experience during humor and laughter. So these findings are also consistent with the findings discussed in an earlier Humor Your Tumor article (see the April, 1998 column) showing that watching a humorous video increases the number of, and activity of, natural killer cells.

There have always been doctors who have emphasized the importance of a “will to live” in fighting serious diseases. Most recently, this banner has been carried nobly by Dr. Bernie Siegel. He emphasizes the importance of hope, determination, optimism and a “fighting spirit” among patients who are battling cancer.

Evidence of the importance of a fighting spirit was obtained in another study of cancer survivors. Cancer patients with a fighting spirit were most likely to be long-term survivors, and have no relapses. Short-term survivors were more likely to show a “stoic, stiff upper lip attitude,” and to continue their lives either as if nothing were different, or with a sense of helplessness or hopelessness.

The question, of course, is how to you go about generating or sustaining hope, optimism, determination and a fighting spirit if these are not qualities you’ve shown throughout your life. Love and your own spirituality are important sources of this hopeful and optimistic attitude. Another source is your sense of humor. It is no coincidence that so many cancer survivors credit their sense of humor for getting them through their ordeal. Humor helps overcome and work through the trials of each day, and when you find a way of laughing in the midst of your problems, you automatically shift toward a frame of mind that invites a hopeful outlook and a conviction that you can beat this disease.

So make it your goal to learn to find something to laugh at every day, and to take yourself a little less seriously, as you continue to take your illness and your treatments very seriously.

35 Year Breast Cancer Survivor With No Chemo or Radiation: Ask, Believe, Receive

leave a comment »

My Mom is a 35 year breast cancer survivor. She did not have chemotherapy, her doctors did not believe it would help.

She had surgery as was common in the early 70’s, and given a terminal prognosis of 12 to 18 months. My Mom has lived the principals of The Secret and is a happy, healthy 86 years old. Her doctor’s were shocked at her remission.

The whole; ask, believe, receive, concept along with the gratitude attitude seems to those of us who use it to be quite valid indeed. As for the science – there does seems to be an awful lot of it out there to support this.

Manifesting a Yellow Marble Changed My Life

leave a comment »

by:  Robert Brown, England

I was hit by a panic attack in Germany 2006 in Stuggart, when I was supporting England in the World Cup, and after this happened to me I suffered from them for about a year and a half. In my mind I knew there was nothing wrong with me, but I couldn’t get away from these attacks. Sometimes I couldn’t even leave my house. It was a horrible time and I thought I’d never get rid of them.

My friend Daniel Gooda introduced The Secret to me. I did what The Secret told me to do, and one thing I wanted to do was manifest something into my life through my thoughts. I spent two weeks thinking and playing images in my head of a yellow marble (I thought this would be a unique thing to manifest).

Then, a few weeks later, I decided to spend some time in Denmark with my Uncle. I told him what I was trying to do and he supported me. One day I was playing with my two year old cousin in the garden, shoveling sand into a wheel barrow. On the fourth shovel I stopped to catch my breath, looking up into the sky, and as I looked down at the wheelbarrow a yellow marble revealed itself from within the sand… (I learned later that my Uncle and Aunty had never bought marbles for their kids)

I felt this feeling of overwhelming bliss, joy, and excitement, and from that day I haven’t had any panic attacks, and I realise that I am in control of my life through my thoughts.

ABM Mushroom Extract is Powerful Medicine Against Cancer

with one comment

In the seventies, two researchers from Penn State visited the Sao Paulo, Brazil area and discovered the local natives to be extremely healthy with a very low rate of disease. The longevity rate was disproportionately high with people living well over 100. Their secret? It was a simple mushroom, they told the researchers, the ABM mushroom (Agaricus Blazei Murill).

Subsequent studies over the next 25 years have shown the ABM to stimulate the immune system and promote natural mechanisms to battle infectious disease and cancers. ABM stimulates lymphocyte T-cell and Helper T-cell production. The polysaccharide contained in ABM stimulates production of interferon and interleukin that indirectly function to destroy and prevent the proliferation of cancer cells. Additionally, ABM turned out to be a very powerful antiviral agent preventing viruses from entering tissues.

Normally, the polysaccharides found in fungus only affect solid cancers, however the polysaccharide in ABM is effective against Ehrich’s ascites carcinoma, sigmoid colonic cancer, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, and liver cancer as well as against solid cancers.

In Japan, ABM, in an injectable form, was found to eliminate all cancerous tumors in 90% of the experimental mice. Additionally, when the mice were fed ABM as a preventative and then injected with a very powerful cancer causing agent (Sarcoma 180), 99.4% of them showed no tumor growth. Conventional medicine has no preventive this powerful.

The studies in Japan showed ABM to be 80% more effective than the world’s number one cancer drug, PSK. It contains much higher levels of beta glucans than the other medicinal mushrooms (Maitake, Shiitake, and Reishi) and stimulates NK (Natural Killer) cell activity.

It should be noted that the beta-glucans in these mushrooms work best when taken with vitamin C.

The studies in Japan were so successful that today Japan is now buying over 90% of the available ABM from Brazil.

The ABM mushroom is available in the US and you can check out the following links:

Ultimate Immune has a Glucan Infusion that is far superior to most ABM Mushroom products (always take with Vitamin C).

ABM freeze dried extract in capsules:

To order mushrooms in bulk, wholesale from China:

RF1000 is an ABM Mushroom product that also contains Cats Claw and Pau D’Arco. Jana Shiloh, a homeopathic consultant in Arizona handles all manner of ABM Mushroom products. You can write to, visit her web site: or phone her at 888.282.9362.

New products have recently been made using this wonderful mushroom. The first is probably the most potent extract thus far is RAAX11. It is currently being studied in Brazil with some astonishing results for breast cancers. Another is OPC Rainforest Mixture has, among other things, Oleander in it.

Both of these, and more, MIGHT be available here:; we say “might” because these people are nearly impossible to get a hold of, and they have no means of purchasing their products over the internet.

One of the largest suppliers in the world is They have links to sites that sell their products and you can also become a distributor.

A special note: Japan’s chief chemotherapy for cancer comes from a mushroom and is nontoxic. Japan employs chemotherapeutic drugs that are toxic only after trying the nontoxic therapies first. At the time of this writing, according to the World Health Organization’s statistics, Japan stands first in overall longevity while the US stands at 24th.

Our friends at Mitobi Enterprises are now your one stop mushroom shop. They now carry the ABM mushroom and if you look all over the web, you’ll see that they have the best prices available. And no, we do not get a kickback from their sales, but please, if you need your mushrooms and you need them fast, this is the place to go:

Please note that though these mushrooms are called the ABM Mushroom, because mushroom classification is based upon few criteria, these are NOT exactly the same as the mushrooms from Brazil. There are farms in China now, and all over the world growing these ABM mushrooms, but they are “not exactly” the same mushrooms from Brazil. They are close, and they do contain healing properties, but the original ABM mushroom can only be grown in the conditions of a rainforest.

Here is what Mitobi publishes about the ABM mushroom:

In the 1970’s researchers noticed that an unusual percentage of people in a small town in Brazil (Piedate, in Sao Paulo) had a very low rate of a number of serious adult diseases. The common factor in these people’s diets was the ABM (Agaricus Blazei Murill) mushroom known to the locals as ‘Cogumelo de Deus’ or ‘Mushroom of God’.

Researchers have isolated large amounts of polysaccharides in this mushroom which appear to significantly boost the immune system. Polysaccharides are made up of individual sugar molecules chained together to form larger sugars. The polysaccharides appear to activate a type of white blood cell known as a macrophage which filters the blood by destroying viruses, bacteria, and perhaps even cancer cells. Shiitake, Maitake and Reishi also contain these polysaccharides.

ABM is also known as Himematsutake and can be used in your cooking the same way as other mushrooms are. Daily dosage for normal body maintenance and prevention is about 6 grams (about ¼ of a dry mushroom) or 40 grams (aprox. 2 mushrooms) for serious illness. Tea is also a popular way of taking the mushroom. Use about 1 mushroom per liter (1 quart) and boil it for an hour. Drink a cup a day, warm or cold. Take vitamin C in conjunction with your medicinal mushrooms to assist in the absorption of the beneficial properties of the mushroom.

We must also inform you that we’ve spoken with a naturopathic physician who visited this “small” village and reported back to us that it’s not all that small, and happen so be situated just a few miles from a very large, cosmopolitan city. We originally published the myths surrounding the discovery of this mushroom by Japanese researchers; how there was an overwhelming population of people over eighty and into their nineties; and how certain diseases were non existent to this “small village.” However, our source tells us that, even though the research on the mushroom has to be accepted, the myths surrounding the discovery of the ABM are probably overblown.

AHCC is a combination of mushroom extracts that is use more than chemotherapy in Japan. We list information on AHCC in our section (within these pages) on Mushrooms.

NOW Foods has the most inexpensive form of AHHC we’ve found. I love NOW Food products because they are the best of the cheapest (or cheapest of the best). One reason they are so inexpensive is that they do NOT advertize and they have NO sales staff.

The Budwig Protocol

leave a comment »

This recipe was an important part of the Budwig Protocol, which, according to many, has been used to treat & prevent a number of diseases including cancer, diabetes and heart disease. In the United States, the law forbids anyone from claiming that something that is classified as a “food” can treat, cure, diagnose or prevent anything; even if it works, it does not matter, while those types of claims may be made about a pharmaceutical drug, they may not be made about a food. Obviously flax oil and cottage cheese are foods, therefore the information on this website is to be used for informational and educational purposes only. It is in no way intended to be interpreted as medical advice.

Dr. Johanna Budwig, one of Germany’s top biochemists, who was nominated for the nobel prize (seven times) for her work, discovered that people with these kinds of diseases also had a deficiency of certain essential fatty acids. Your body must have these EFAs in order to maintain good health, but it cannot manufacture them on it’s own, therefore you MUST get them from your food. Unfortunately the typical American diet provides very little Omega 3 and usually provides too much Omega 6. The proper balance is very important.

Dr. Budwig sucessfully treated thousands of patients with her protocol which included the flax oil cottage cheese recipe as well as freshly juiced fruits & vegetables; and she forbid other food items such as sugar, meat, animal fat, margarine, butter, and a few more. The Budwig Protocol can be found in Dr. Budwig’s book “The Oil Protein Diet Cookbook.” This diet is also known as “The Anti-Cancer Diet.”

Her success rate was incredible. Many of her patients, terminally ill with cancer, had basically been sent home to die. But by following the Budwig protocol, 90% of them fully regained their health.  She stated that the other 10% had likely received too much damage from the traditional medical treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation, which she strongly opposed.

Why did this protocol work so well?  Actually it’s all VERY scientific.

Flax seed oil is one of the best sources of Omega 3. Cottage cheese is a good source of a sulferic based protein (needed to make the flax oil water soluable and easy for your body to assimilate). This mixture causes a chemical reaction to occur in the body which oxigenates the cells. According to Dr. Budwig cancer cannot live in an oxigenated environment. In fact, she recommended the recipe to be taken daily to help prevent many diseases. For the terminally ill patients, she treated them with 3 to 6 servings per day.

The “We” Nurse (Joke)

leave a comment »

“There ain’t much fun in medicine, but there’s a heck of a lot of medicine in fun.”
                    John Billings

“When I was in the hospital, I had a “We” nurse.  She began each sentence with “How are we today?”  “We need to have a bath.”

This really irritated me, so I decided to play a little joke on her.
One day, she brought in a specimen cup and requested a urine sample.  After she left, I poured my apple juice into the cup.  Then she returned for the specimen, she observed it and noted, “My, we’re a little cloudy today, aren’t we?”
I asked to see it, removed the lid and said, “Yep, better run it through again” and drank it.  The look of shock on her face was priceless.”
